Junior Achievement South Africa, South Africa

The purpose of JASA is to prepare young people for life after school by raising their awareness of economic issues, teaching them entrepreneurial and life skills, providing them with an understanding of the business world and enhancing their sense of personal responsibility through practical business experience. By contributing to their personal growth, JASA improves the employability and business capacity of young people.

The strategy adopted to achieve these goals is the facilitation of a range of programmes to young people from the ages of 8 to 25. The programmes for junior school learners are delivered during school hours while those for older learners are delivered after hours. Educators are trained in the facilitation of the programmes thus developing their own teaching skills. Programmes are offered in all 9 provinces of South Africa. While centrally managed by the National Office based in Johannesburg, local agents are contracted to manage the programmes at a local level.

The programme methodology is based on an experiential learning approach with learners practically engaging in business and entrepreneurial activities. JASA works in urban and rural previously disadvantaged schools. Programmes are delivered on the school premises. To date over 400 000 learners have participated in JASA programmes around the country. In 2008 alone, over 11 500 learners engaged in programmes, an increase of over 60% from the previous year.

The organisation is registered as an educational trust and is subject to the governance of an independent Board of Directors and Board of Trustees. The Board of Directors manages the governance aspects of the organisation, the performance of the Managing Director and plays a role in the strategy of the organisation. The Board of Directors meet four times per annum. The Board of Trustees manages the endowment funds and meets once per annum.

The organisation is celebrating its 30 year Anniversary this year and has demonstrated sustainability and expertise in the delivery of high quality programmes on a national basis.

Young people are engaged in the development and revision of programmes in the form of programme evaluations, per and post programme tests and interim assessment tests. In addition regular research is conducted to ensure the relevance of the programmes to the needs of young people.

A JASA Youth Council is made up of 12 young graduates off the programmes who assist in the marketing of the programmes and in programme development.

Since 1994, the new South African government has taken giant leaps on the path of sustainable development, focusing mainly on correcting the disparities of the apartheid era and building a better future for all the people of South Africa. Social services - education, health and welfare – take up the largest part of the national budget. The motivation of JASA to participate in the current project is prompted by the following: 1. sustainable development is on South Africa’s agenda; 2. South Africa is facing severe unemployment and poverty and poor people tend to be most directly dependent on natural resources; 3. cooperation with the EU and other countries is needed to overcome the problems because of their globalty.
